One of SciPlay’s Casinos, Goldfish, has a new feature called Ruby Reef. I had the pleasure of providing the music and sound design for this feature. Lobby themes tend to be on the shorter side of things and this track is about 52 seconds long. One aspect I’m pretty happy with is how I fused two different styles together and you can hear that change over at 35 seconds. Another element I’m happy with is layering in various recordings of my voice singing the melody with the horns during the A section. I intentionally tucked these vocal parts in a bit so it’s not super noticeable but adds a certain warmth and texture to the melody. I wanted the theme for Ruby Reef to be cool, energetic and sleek. I think the theme hits those marks pretty well and hopefully you’ll agree!

This track has, at least to me, a unique vibe. It feels retro and modern at the same time. The Goldfish Casino has several new features, some new artwork as well as new sounds. Go check out the game and see for yourself!

IT’S A TWO FOR ONE UPDATE!

This week’s update includes two new slot themes from Monopoly Slots and they couldn’t be more different from each other. One is for Monopoly Marvin Gardens, an upbeat, energetic, light and carefree tune. My favorite moment in this piece is the turnaround at 0:50. Writing music in this style is always tricky because it’s a delicate balance between “too cheesy” or “too silly” or “too cartoony” but you still want to capture that whimsical, carefree and light hearted vibe. The other is for Clue Orchid’s Mystery which is also upbeat but has a more sinister, mysterious vibe to it. I love the ascending arpeggio figure and how it changes with the harmony at 0:19 in. One of my favorite things about working at SciPlay is the fact that I get to represent major brands. Often times these are brands that I remember playing with or experiencing in my childhood, so to get to be able to take part in them now as an adult, is truly a neat experience! Another great perk to SciPlay is all of the free snacks… but I digress.

In the beginning…

Life can be quite interesting at times and that’s certainly the case with today’s update: Fruits Basket! For those of you who don’t know, I got my start working in-house at FUNimation Entertainment. It was a wonderful way to begin my career and while at FUNi (that’s what the employees call FUNimation) I learned a tremendous amount about sound design, working with brand managers, how a production pipeline flows and how to produce audio in a fast paced, evolving environment. I also made some great friends who I still chat with to this day. After about two years, I moved on to work for LEGO Universe but I truly loved my time at FUNi and am very thankful for it.

Anime – Take Two!

Which brings me back to Fruits Basket. A while back I connected with some of my friends who are still at FUNimation and discovered that they had a need for audio work in their trailers. Specifically sound design, dialog editing and mixing/mastering audio for their trailers. I jumped at the opportunity! Working in anime again, even via a freelancing role, has been SO MUCH FUN. I love the quirkiness, humor and vibe as well as the art styles often found in anime. Plus it just reminds me of starting out in my career. I told my wife that I literally felt like I was going back in time when I was working on this trailer. In short, it’s been an absolute blast and I’m so thankful for it!

I’m proud to share my music for The Spirit Tree! When composing music for Sciplay, many times I write large scale, epic music that involves a lot of activity. That’s what supports the theme and game style. So it’s really nice and refreshing when I get to take another route – which is exactly what I got to do with The Spirit Tree! The incredible artwork (made by Jen Yung) and more peaceful vibe opened up the door for me to create something I’m truly proud of and I hope you enjoy it! Below is the track that Ryan Reilly and I arranged and produced. For those that don’t know how Materia albums work, each participate submits a track arrangement proposal and then the producer(s) behind that particular album select the proposals they feel would be the best fit and direction for the album as a whole. Our first proposal didn’t get selected so in that case we got to pick from any remaining tracks not selected yet. Burn! Bobonga wasn’t picked so Ryan and I took it on. To be completely honest, the original is a rather unique and difficult track to arrange, however I feel that Ryan and I did a good job of keeping the original vibe while expanding on some of its ideas and rhythms.

I also did some of the sound design featured in the opening track of the album:

I must confess…. I’ve never finished Chrono Trigger. I know, I know! (Dodges rotten fruit) I did play all of the way through Chrono Cross at least! But I do need to go back and give ol’ Chrono Trigger a full play through… at the very least to enjoy the excellent music it offers. And I’ve heard such good things about the story.

Finally I’m heading up to my alma mater Oklahoma Baptist University, to give three lectures on networking, working and living as a composer/sound designer in the video game industry. Aside from those things, still working on more tunes for Skatebird and doing other various freelancing for other projects that I can’t talk about publicly yet. And, of course, still at SciPlay. I hope all of you are doing well and not suffering as much from allergies as I am right now! 😛

I’m happy to share with you the main theme I composed and produced for Monopoly Go Scottie, developed and published by SciPlay. Writing music for light hearted projects is always a challenge for me. I want to support the casual, cute vibe without becoming too predictable or cheesy. I also don’t want the music to get in the way of the setting of the game – only to enhance it. I was particularly happy with how this theme and the arrangement turned out. I hope you like it as well!

If you haven’t played Monopoly Slots yet, you owe it to yourself to check it out. It’s WAY more than just a normal virtual casino game. Tons of quirky characters, hilarious dialog blended with fantastic artwork really help push this game to the next level. Add in all of the various side quests which you take to help make all of the various Monopoly properties evolve and grow and you have a winning formula! In this update I’m going to showcase two different projects I did for SciPlay. The first is some creepy, orchestral hybrid music for a slot called Ouija 2: Board of Fortune. And the second is a promo video for another slot I did called Battleship Floating Fortress. Now you see why I named this update “Fortune Telling and Battleships.” 😛

Battleship Floating Fortress

The second thing I wanted to showcase is a bit unique. It’s a promo video for Battleship Floating Fortress and it was made by one of our in-house video editors that took a bunch of the music tracks and sound effects I’d created for the slot. So while I didn’t have anything to do with the actual audio edit of the promo, it’s using all of my work. I think our video editor did a fantastic job!

This was one of the most complex slots I’d worked on to date!

Devolver E3 Conference

So life has been crazy but very good lately and I’ve got several things to update you all on. First off, I was lucky enough to provide some saxophone recordings to John Robert Matz’s score for this year’s Devolver E3 conference. If you haven’t seen it yet, you can stream the entire video here:

John Robert Matz is an amazing composer and musician that I’ve been friends with since 2015-ish when we first jammed in a hotel conference room at GDC. And then got politely kicked out because it was after hours! 😛 John was kind enough to ask me to record some alto saxophone parts and I had a blast being a part of it! SkateBIRD

It’s also been a while since I’ve done an update on SkateBIRD! There’s plenty I’m not allowed to discuss yet but what I can share with you is that we funded our Kickstarter and then some! Our initial goal was $20k, which would be enough to allow us to make the base game but thanks to an amazing community and tons of really positive press, we reached $67,200!! This allows for several cool stretch goals to be added to the game including:

Breadslices of Life – unlock side stories exploring the rise of birb skating
Skate Heaven – bonus level
Super Create-A-Birb – deeper level of customizing your birb
Pet-A-Birb – you can now pet your birb in-game
Outdoor Skate Park – another bonus level… that’s OUTSIDE!
Birb in Many Shapes – allows for more unique shapes of birb models which increase the amount of birb species we can have in-game
Photo Mode – makes the in-game screen shot mode much more in-depth

Them’s Fighting Herds

Cue the insanity…

Back in 2016 I started working with an indie developer, Mane6, on a neat fighting game called Them’s Fighting Herds. I was in charge of doing the sound design for all of the creatures, special abilities and spells. It was a really fun project. Fast forward to SkateBIRD (mentioned above) and I discovered that Glass Bottom Games and Mane6 have partnered up! Mane6 is creating artwork from the characters in Them’s Fighting Herd for use on in-game skateboards. What a crazy twist and talk about a small world! Here’s one of them that I absolutely LOVE:

Inside:Outside Saxophone Retreat

Plenty of late nights running jazz standards, improvising or working on technique. And Careless Whispers…

This is how my studio looks most days and nights. Outside of game audio, I’m still woodshedding my saxophone quite a bit in prep of this year’s Inside:Outside Retreat. This year’s feature guest lecturer is Jeff Coffin, who’s played with Dave Matthews Band, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones and many others. And Bob freakin’ Reynolds will be there too (guy’s a KILLER player) among several other amazing musicians. I’m both super excited and terrified. Should be a great week of learning and growing! And yes… I use my piano as a desk/work bench. DON’T JUDGE ME!

That’s about it (for now)…

That’s about it for this update. There are a few other things I’m taking part in that I cannot talk too much about right now. I’m working on some sound design for a VST. Still working at SciPlay and loving it. As more things get made public, I’ll be sure to update y’all. On the personal side, we’ve got some family vacation planned soon (cannot wait) and I’m trying to get back into the routine of working out and eating better. (Curse you chocolate!)

Exile is Live!

Towards the end of 2018, I joined up with Materia Collective again to take part with a cover album paying tribute to Supergiant Games. The album, Exile: A Tribute to Supergiant Games, was released today. My idea was to take The Mancer’s Dilemma and rework it into a big band swing chart – renamed “The Mancer’s Swing.” If you’ve not played Bastion, Transistor or Pyre, you’re truly missing out! Bastion was a personal favorite of mine so I was really excited to see how I could twist and turn some of it’s themes into something new. I wanted to challenge myself and see how I could take The Mancer’s Dilemma and change it into this new setting. It wasn’t an easy task!

This was really a learning experience for me! While I’ve produced big band-ish tracks using virtual instruments, I’ve never coordinated so many live musicians and took on a project of this size and scope! Some of my approaches worked well and some of them provided great lessons for me to learn!
