Create Loud and other news!

It’s been a crazy week and I’d hoped to update the website about five days ago with some news. Such is life. I was extremely honored to be interviewed by Create Loud, a podcast by Rachel Robison and Cody Crabb. We discussed the value of mentoring – for both the mentee and the mentor! We also discussed various aspects of the game and film audio industries as well as how to best collaborate with clients.

Also my own vlog, Madsen’s Musings now has seven episodes out! Episode eight has been filmed and just needs to be edited. I’ve really enjoyed putting this vlog together and I hope others have enjoyed it as well.

Finally, I’m just about finished up with doing sound design for a top-down 8-bit retro shooter project (more news coming soon on that front) and will be starting music for another puzzle video game in about a week. All while working full time at SGI and still freelancing for various saxophone gigs. Crazy times – but I love it. I still have some space should anyone need music or sound for their next project. So get in touch if you do!

Madsen’s Musings: Episode 4 – Reframing

The fourth episode of Madsen’s Musings is now out! In this episode, I discuss the concept of reframing your mental picture or idea of yourself, your work and your place in the industry. It’s an important concept that I feel can really help keep one focused on the right goals, and not get too distracted by comparing one’s stature to someone else’s.

The cool thing about reframing is that it can apply to anything! Struggling to lose weight? Try reframing your mindset to focus on the victories you ARE having in that journey. Wanting to build up your brand and getting frustrated? Change your focus on to what you’ve done well so far while pushing to learn and do more for your brand over time.

So much of the journey in professional audio is many tiny steps done over a period of time. Invest in yourself and keep your mental image of yourself in check with reframing.

The third episode of Madsen’s Musing vlog is now out!

Watch it here!

This episode discusses the importance of having a system to help you have the best odds when freelancing, networking and practicing. Madsen’s Musings is a new vlog series that I’m putting out on a (hopefully) weekly basis. Ouija: Board of Fortune

Ouija: Board of Fortune is one of the recent slot games SGI released which features my music and sound design. So often I have to write in an upbeat, peppy, happy manner, so it’s refreshing when I get to take a stroll on the dark(er) side of things! The artwork has a very gothic feel with a supernatural undercurrent so I wanted my music to give a sense of foreboding, slight dread mixed with action. Check out the demo here: https://youtu.be/2vkiuic_U-8
My friend Logynn B. Hailey did the artwork and I thought she killed it! You can see more of her artwork here: https://www.behance.net/logynn-b-hailley. You can play the slot currently on the Goldfish App: https://www.facebook.com/GoldFishCasinoSlots/ and it will be out on other SGI casinos in the future.

New Vlog Madsen’s Musings is now out!

It’s been a while since my last update! I’m very excited to share with you the first episode of my new vlog, Madsen’s Musings. In this series, I’ll discuss all things audio – from music composition to production, to sound design and focus quite a bit on the human elements of being a working composer/sound designer. Wanna know how to get into the industry? Want to know how to improve your online presence? I’m also setting up interviews with other industry pros for future episodes! This is the vlog for you!

Check out episode 1 here: Madsen’s Musings – Episode 1 : Are You Hyper Critical?

I’ll be learning as I go as well! This is my first vlog series to produce and publish, so I’m sure I’ll be changing my approaches, gear and techniques as I get deeper in the process. If you have some questions or topics you’d like to have discussed, please reach out on the YT channel! Comments, feedback and thumbs up are also more than welcomed! This vlog series also showcases my newly animated Madsen Studios logo with original sound design that I put to it! I’m looking forward to making Madsen’s Musings a content rich resource that encourages and teaches others as well as myself. Come take part and let’s learn together!

This first episode deals with a topic that impacts so many of us creative types: being hyper critical of our own work! This can quickly lead down a path where our inspiration, morale and energy level suffer, which makes being creative that much harder. Check out the episode to hear more about what I have to say about this topic. And please subscribe so you don’t miss future episodes. I’ve got about 21 more videos planned out and several others already in the production or post production phases.

Want to get in touch with me directly? Want to work together? Curious what my favorite candy bar is? Get in touch!

Thanks so much!

Moving! And two new videos!

It’s been a good long while since I’ve updated this site! Sorry about that!

So some news – we’re moving BACK to Austin, TX. SGI is relocating me to the Austin branch to assist with audio needs down there and this will put us much closer to our families again. It’s a generous and amazing offer from SGI and we’re thrilled to accept it. Leaving Iowa will be bittersweet because it’s been a wonderful place for our family. Great people – beautiful nature and some really great places to eat! Moving, especially across multiple states, is never easy. So good thoughts, positive vibes and plenty of chocolate donations would be greatly appreciated! 😛

Also I’m still busy writing music and producing sound for SGI as well as freelancing on a film project as the sound designer and mixer, finishing up Spartan Fist’s music and audio as well as finishing up a few other unannounced projects on the side. Busy times! Below are two of my more recent releases – Treasure of Cortez and Monopoly Colossal Boardwalk. I hope you enjoy them!

Much more music and sound to come as things continue to be made public. Madsen Studios LLC will take a break in a few weeks with all of the moving craziness but we’ll be back in business once we’re settled in Austin! If you need audio – hit me up. I’d love to chat with you.

Bio:

Nate Madsen is a 13 year industry vet who’s worked in games, films, taught college courses and has performed and recorded in various settings on both piano and saxophone. He’s been with SGI for almost two years and has been running Madsen Studios LLC since 2005. On the weekends he likes to be very still and watch the grass grow. And he’s considering taking up the bagpipes. He’s currently in Cedar Falls, IA but, if you’re read this post above, you now know he’s moving back to Austin, TX. His favorite color is green.

The View Upon the Horizon

The View Upon the Horizon is a piece that I wrote just for fun! I was playing around with some chord progressions last Sunday and then stumbled upon this melody. The entire piece was written in about 45 minutes and then I hired a great cellist (https://www.fiverr.com/caroteruel) to record the part for me. She nailed it! This is actually an alternate version where the piano part is also a bit more simplified than the first arrangement; which I feel helps the melody breathe a bit more. The piece reminds me of someone looking over a land that they’re about to leave. The future is somewhat uncertain but their honor and duty propels them forward on their quest.

I hope you enjoy it! And, as always, please get in touch with me should you need custom audio for your next project! I always love working with folks!

Savage Planet

I was very pleased to help out with a new Kickstarter for a new boardgame called Savage Planet: Fate of Fantos. This is my second time to work with Imp House Games. The first time was helping out with the music, sound design and mix for their other Kickstarter for Chaos of Cthulhu. This team has consistently impressed me with their creative and fun boardgames!

The Kickstarter is doing very well – already up to over $8K on the second day! Well to their goal of $12,500!

For this video, I produced the music, sound design and mixed in the narration up to the 1:28 mark. Go check out Savage Planet: The Fate of Fantos and please consider backing this awesome board game!

Working to Picture: When the Edit Changes

In this video tutorial, I discuss how to address edit changes to the film after you’ve already begun writing music to it. While we’d all love to work to 100% locked picture edit but in many cases, that’s just not realistic. There always seems to be, at least, a few changes to the film. I chose to use the You Again web series, which I scored, as an example of using this workflow. I found it really helped and I hope it does the same for you. For more info on You Again go here: http://youagainwebseries.com/ and for more info on me and my work, go here: http://madsenstudios.com/.

Excuse the mic – I ended up using my webcam mic in this video. Even with clean up, it doesn’t sound as good as my studio mics do. Not making that mistake again! I hope you enjoy it!

Rainbow Splash

Pixel Carrot Studio hired me to compose music for their new puzzle game called Rainbow Splash. I’ve worked with them before on another ambient, relaxing puzzle game so I was very excited to partner up for another title. I ended up writing three tracks of music, each about two minutes long.

Below you can see the game’s trailer, hear a portion of one of the tracks and see how the game plays. I think it looks gorgeous and I love how the look of the game changes!

Go grab the game from iTunes here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/rainbow-splash/id1215505525?ls=1&mt=8
