THE 80’s CALLED, THEY WANT THEIR MUSIC BACK

This update will be pretty brief but I wanted to shout out a new colleague I’ve had the pleasure of working with – Sleepless Nights. His name is Jonny Adams and he’s a great guitarist, arranger and producer who’s also getting into video game scoring. Really nice guy as well! I heard his track, Fixation, in the music nerds group I mean Logic Pro Users group I’m a part of on Facebook. To say I loved it is an understatement! So I reached out to him to see if I could collaborate with him, just for fun! He checked out me and my work and agreed. So last Sunday, right before the storms hit Austin (and the rest of Texas) I recorded video and audio for him to use. The new updated version is here:

WHAT IS SYNTHWAVE?

For those that don’t known what Synthwave is, check out this Wikipedia entry: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synthwave

Synthwave (also called outrun, retrowave, or futuresynth[5]) is an electronic music microgenre that is based predominately on the music associated with action, science-fiction, and horror film soundtracks of the 1980s.[2] Other influences are drawn from that decade’s art and video games.[3] Synthwave musicians often espouse nostalgia for 1980s culture and attempt to capture the era’s atmosphere and celebrate it.[8]

The genre developed in the mid-to late 2000s through French house producers, as well as younger artists who were inspired by the 2002 video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Other reference points included composers John Carpenter, Jean-Michel Jarre, Vangelis (especially his score for the 1982 film Blade Runner), and Tangerine Dream. Synthwave reached wider popularity after being featured in the soundtracks of the 2011 film Drive (which included some of the genre’s best-known songs) and the 2010s Netflix series Stranger Things.

I really dig doing this kind of music and hope you enjoy it as well. The cool graphics are also from: https://www.instagram.com/visualdon/ so be sure to go give him some love as well. That’s about it. Told you this one would be pretty short! Life is getting back to normal mostly for us here in TX, thank goodness! While the snow was beautiful, it’s great to have power, warmer temps and hopefully we’ll have potable water soon!

WHAT A WEEK!

As many news reports have probably shared already, it was QUITE the week in Austin (and in Texas for that matter). Snow (that white, cold stuff that falls from the sky) rarely shows up this far South and if it does, it’s just a light dusting. It rarely lasts more than a day and then it melts off. We had some snow early this winter and it was way more than I was expecting for this area of the world. I’ve lived in Denver, Colorado and in Cedar Falls, Iowa so I KNOW snow. I thought, at best, we’d have some ice and that would be it. NOPE. We had a nice snowday and then it all basically melted away pretty fast. Not much else to report.

That was last time. This time was radically different.

Not only did we get a decent amount of snow for Austin, we got ice and then power went out. For days. Water is still not potable yet although it’s been flowing much better as of today. During the power outages the temp got down to 1 degree. That’s not windchill, that was the actual temp. Highly unusually for central Texas! My family and I are all safe, thankfully! And really, they were super stars. Rolled with the punches – we read books, played games, ran around the living room to stay warm. It got down to 50 degrees in the house so at night we’d all be in the master bedroom.

Here’s a vlog where you can see some of the pics and hear a bit more about it as well as how I broke one of my own rules… and what I did to fix it. And for the record, I still get excited about snow.

SKATEBIRD NEWS

Also SkateBIRD was a part of Play What’s Next Festival at Steam. We launched a new trailer to show off the new, not previously seen Rooftop level and I’ve been busy releasing new tracks of music monthly on my Youtube Channel. Getting quite close to finishing up the OST for this game and let me tell you – I’ve loved every second of it! SkateBIRD has taught me many new approaches as an artist, producer and musician and have given me a new genre to play around in. Check out the trailer below:

OTHER HAPPENINGS

I’ve tried to become somewhat hip (if that’s even possible) and do more Instagram thingies. It’s still QUITE new to me but I’m starting to get the hang of it. There’s a really cool graphic artist show’s doing some really sweet, retro graphics which fit perfect with what I’m writing for SkateBIRD. So I put a video out on IGTV. Check it out here:

Also I’m still working at SciPlay and loving it. That huge side project that was under NDA is still under NDA for now. Hang tight though because I should have some news for that soon. That’s about all I can say about it, sadly. I am REALLY excited to finally get to share it all with you when I can! I’ve been doing some more work with Appy Therapy on their Handwriting Heroes app. This one is quite special to me because my own son is special needs and benefits from the exact curriculum this program teaches. It’s really unique to be able to use my audio to help build something that helps him and so many other kiddos like him.

I’ve also been giving several talks to colleges, high schools and middle schools about what I do. Getting a chance to talk with students about all of the incredible opportunities in audio production is something I’m super passionate about. Here’s a candid shot of the students of Mr. Kevin Pruiett’s band program at Paris High School in Paris, Illinois hearing my presentation. If you’re interested in having me talk with your students about game and multi-media audio – reach out! Especially during so much remote learning, it could be the perfect opportunity to enhance and change up what your students are doing in the classroom (virtual or not).

TWO NEW TRACKS RELEASED FOR SKATEBIRD!

It’s been a GOOD, long while since I’ve been able to release some of the new music I’ve been working on for SkateBIRD but that changed yesterday! Blue Streak and Pantone Tone were both released to my Youtube Channel and you can check them out below! SkateBIRD’s OST remains one of the most unique ventures I’ve taken on. It’s quirky, unique and a lot of fun. I’m enjoying taking so many sources of audio and sound, mashing and editing them all together while creating my own samples, recordings and melodies. I’ve also been able to hire several friends along the way to add in things like live trumpet or bass! To date, I’ve got ten songs done and am working on more. I’m so excited for the world to get to play around in the world of SkateBIRD. Enjoy these two tracks below!

Look for SkateBIRD to come out Q1 2021!

THE FROSTLANDS IS NOW RELEASED TOO!

As some of you are aware, I’m an active musician, arranger and producer on Materia Collective. It’s been a wonderful, fun journey over the past five years! Our most recent release is called FLAMESGRACE and it’s a tribute to Octopath Traveler. This is an outstanding game, which I first learned about while working on another cover from the game. Sean Schafianski is a friend and fellow saxophonist and he was kind enough to ask me to play the tenor sax melody and solo over his jazz arrangement of Therion the Thief. Check it out below:

This got me tuned in (pun intended) to the game’s music, which blew me away. What an amazing collection of songs with strong melodies, wonderful arrangements and sonic vistas. So when Materia Collective announced that their next album would be a tribute to Octopath Traveler, I KNEW I had to take part. I put together a proposal to do a big band setting of The Frostlands more in the vein of a pop ballad or Chicago because I didn’t want swing or jazz for this arrangement. I think it turned out great and hopefully you all do as well! Take a listen below!

You can stream the full album as well as purchase it here: https://bandcamp.materiacollective.com/album/flamesgrace-a-tribute-to-octopath-traveler. The variety of high polish of music on this entire album is quite inspiring and I’m very humbled to get to take part in it!

OTHER HAPPENINGS…

I’m also very pleased to say that the audio for that huge side project (the one I can’t really mention by name or such due to NDA) is DONE! It was a massive project – original music, sound design production, editing dialog and implementation of it all into Unity. Whew! So now it’s the waiting game. And I SUCK at waiting. But hopefully soon I’ll have some more specific info to share with you all. In the mean time, I’m enjoying getting back into a better work/life balance, watching Star Trek Discovery with my wife and hoping that this COVID madness ends soon. I hope that all of you are healthy, happy and safe!

Chain Chronicle: The Light of Haecceitas Complete Series

When I got this video to mix and produce sound design to, I was honestly blown away. The show’s art style, voice acting and music are simply superb. I felt immediately drawn into its world and wanted to know more. Quite an effective trailer – I must say! So getting to work on it was a ton of fun and provided plenty of moments to make the audio shine and impact the viewer. I hope you like the trailer!

SO…. STILL IN QUARANTINE.

Like so many, we’re still in lock down mostly. It’s strange to think I’ve not been in a date with my wife since early-March. Our kids haven’t really left the house in that time either. We’re doing okay and pushing through but it’s definitely a different lifestyle for us – as it is for so many. Ironically, this time period has been one of the busiest times for me professionally and I should have plenty of updates and announcements for ya’ll soon. Until then, mum is still the word. I’ll share as soon as I can!

I’ve not done as many vlogs as I’d like and hope to get back to that soon. In the meantime, I’ve got one final push to get a huge side project out the door, finish up a few smaller projects, continue work with SciPlay and then the last few songs for Skatebird. There have also been several new arrangements done which I’ll share once it’s made public. It’s a really exciting and tiring time! How are you handling quarantine? Have you resume a mostly normal life style or are you still in a state of flux? Getting used to it or still struggling? I’ve definitely been eating too much and not sleeping all that great. Need to exercise more too. Also I finished DARK on Netflix and LOVED it. Gotta find another great show to watch.

Sort of a short update but I was super excited to finally share this Chain Chronicle: The Light of Haecceitas Complete Series Trailer with you all! To be honest, my side in Anime has slowed down in the last few months, which is okay given how busy the other things are – but I really hope to do more of these trailer mixes in the future! (Sigh) So much of this type of work is hurry up and wait. And I hate waiting! 😛

So in the short term, here’s a recent vlog that might be helpful! Take care of yourselves and each other.

DUAL SCREENS PODCAST

The good folks at Dual Screens Podcast, Andreas Asimakis and Stephen Fontana, asked me to join them for their next episode of Dual Screens Podcast. It was an absolute blast! The interview talked about my start in game audio, working on Skatebird and what it’s like to be an audio professional as well as pineapple on pizza. You know, the hard stuff! You can check out the podcast here: https://ndspodcast.podbean.com/e/nate-madsen-composer-skatebird-the-duel-screens-podcast-31/

OTHER INTERVIEWS

I can’t talk too much about it right now but I was also able to take part in a film documentary about my work in game audio. The film is still in the works and isn’t announced or out yet so details are scarce. More on that soon! There’s also another interview that I have on the books that will be happening later this month. More on that once the interview is done and made public. Side note: interviews are definitely a new thing for me and I’m trying to get more comfortable doing them – but it’s definitely exciting and fun!

GOLDFISH TIKI ISLAND’S HOP

One of the new mini-games that is featured in SciPlay’s Goldfish is Tiki’s Island Hop! I was very pleased to do the music as well as sound design for this feature and am super pumped to see it go live! For the music we needed Polynesian themed tracks so I played in a bunch of percussion, mallets then recorded live ukulele (of which I’m only passible as a player)! Then I added some vocal stacks of me during the break. The music and artwork changes as you get deeper into the mini-game and progress to other islands. There are four different tiers of music altogether and this demo just highlights the base tier. Go give it a spin! Get the game here: https://www.sciplay.com/games/gold-fish/ or play it online at: https://apps.facebook.com/goldfishcasinoslots.

I’m quite proud of how it turned out and wanted to share. Hope you enjoy it!

ANOTHER VLOG – COMPRESSION BASICS

I also deviated from my normal vlog approach and did an overview on compression and showed a few ways to understand the various controls of compressor as well as how to look at the waveforms to deduce what the compressor is doing to the signal. I hope it’s helpful! Check it out below:

OTHER HAPPENINGS

I’m in the final stretch on a huge side project that I’ve been working on for the past few months. Lots of evenings and weekends spent working on this and I’m so eager to see how the public responds to it. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel… and I don’t think it’s a train. Here’s hoping! More on this project and my involvement in it once things are made public!

HEY, REMEMBER ME?

So I know I updated this blog just a few days ago but those two short films I worked on have now launched. Peter Sapira reached out to me after having a mutual contact (from 2014!) referred me to him. He needed some audio clean-up, leveling out, mixing and mastering. The two short films he sent me were immediately engaging, entertaining and funny! Working with him was a pure blast and I’m very happy with how they turned out! Take them out for a quick spin (they’re really short) – and please note – a little bit of rough language if you have young-uns around – but nothing horrible! PG-13 or so. 😛 Enjoy!

Man, does this hit home for anyone else, or is it just me? I cannot tell you how many times, during a “conversation” with Sarah where my tiny voice says “don’t say that, don’t!” and then my dumb self says “and one more thing…” It NEVER ends well. 😛 Relationships are hilarious sometimes, right?!

We’ve all worked with someone like this. Maybe I AM someone like this. Surely not, though, right? Right? I mean, I don’t ever go on and on and on about something without an ending in sight. I mean, sure I elaborate sometimes but that’s only because I…. (voice just gets softer and softer during fade out)

Man I LOVE working in film and hope to do more of it in the future! Do you have a film that needs some music? Or sound design? Or perhaps a mix? I’m here and ready to take part! Hit me up.

BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE!

Another Anime trailer I did with FUNimation has launched – Black Clover: Season Two, Part Two Trailer. To be completely honest, all I know about this show is what I saw in this one trailer. So I don’t know a ton about it but it certainly looks interesting and I’ve heard it has quite the following! I’m always excited to get to work with FUNimation on another trailer as it always teaches me how to solve various audio issues when doing sound design or mixing and mastering. I hope you enjoy it!

THAT’S ABOUT ALL FOR NOW

It’s always fun to share film work as I don’t do it nearly as often as I’d like. Plus, I have several more things in the works that should be made public soon-ish. Also I have a few more vlogs I’m planning on shooting and airing once I can get some time to breathe. In the mean time it’s just work-work-work, wrestle with the kids, eat queso and dream about making some more BBQ. ( I recently ordered an offset smoker and I cannot wait for it to arrive.) In between all of that, my wife are slowly catching up on Parks and Recreation. What are you doing to stay busy and entertained during this strange time? I hope you’re all doing well, staying safe and getting the most you can during quarantine.

I’M STILL ALIVE…

Hey all! I’m still alive! It’s been a good while since I’ve uploaded some new content. This is for a few reasons – waiting for things to go public so I can share them, being super busy washing my hair (now you know that one is a lie) and being slammed with freelancing. But I wanted to share with you Radiant Season 1 Part 1!
Check it out below:

It’s always so much fun to take the stems from the video editors of these trailers, add in my own sound design as well as sweeteners and then mix and master all of it into one cohesive experience. It can be quite the puzzle to solve but something I enjoy quite a bit! Plus it’s such a different workflow than most of my other work – so I’m very thankful for it! As more Anime trailers go live – I’ll be sure to share them with you all.

WHAT ELSE IS NEW?

I’ve also released two vlog episodes as well as a few jam session videos. With the freelance schedule I’ve had the last few months (more about that below), it’s been rather hard to get as many vlogs or videos out as I’d like. It’s my hope that once my plate clears a bit, I’ll be able to produce more. I’ll feature three of my recent videos below:

OTHER HAPPENINGS:

As previously mentioned, freelancing is SUPER busy right now, with just about every week night being taken up with tasks until about 11PM or even midnight. Then I get up with my kiddos starting about 6:15 or so. So while I’m thankful for the work, it’s been a grind. Skatebird is still happening and I’m also working on an arrangement of Materia Collective. There’s also a huge side project which I can’t talk about just yet. Then add in the usual batch of various Fiverr gigs and then my full time work at SciPlay. It’s been a lot. I’ve also been dieting and working out A TON more lately.

Starting to see some good results too! I’m down 16 lbs. We’re doing the Biggest Loser at SciPlay and the competition this year is FIERCE. I’m currently in 4th place of out 20 contestants. So please… refrain from shipping me donuts and pizzas until after the first week in April!

WHAT’S COMING OUT NEXT?

Unfortunately, I cannot be very specific right now due to NDAs. It’s looking like I’ll have quite a bit to share with you in the next few months or so (give or take). Trust me, I HATE waiting so it’s quite hard for me. I’ll share more as I can. I hope you’re all doing well and having a great 2020 so far. I’ll probably reach out again just to ensure you all that I am, indeed, still alive.

Do you like big muscles, huge explosions and punching?

Then boy do I have a fun update for YOU! The Dragon Ball Super – Part 10 trailer went live yesterday and I’m quite proud of it! I did some sound design, dialog editing then mixed and mastered of the audio for this trailer. I remember when I first started working in-house at FUNimation, how pumped I got to work on established brands. The Dragon Ball brand is perhaps one of the best known IPs in all of Anime so any time you get to work on such a high profile property, it’s very exciting! Check out the trailer below:

A New Challenger Appears!

Another new thing, which I cannot speak about too much right now, is that I just signed a contract for another large game. I’ll be composing music, producing sound design and implementing the audio for this neat project. That’s about all I can say right now but I’m super jazzed about it and will share more once it’s made public. Stay tuned!

New Years Resolutions

Like many, I’ve made some New Year’s Resolutions for 2020. I’m aiming to eat A LOT more pie, cookies and brownies. Oh and ice cream. I think this is a resolution I can stick to! 😛 Kidding aside, I haven’t made formal resolutions yet but I have some basic goals. I’m striving to grow my brand, grow myself as a person, lose some weight and get a bit better balance in my life and soul. As far as how to do that… I think it’s a lot of tiny, smart decisions instead of a few, large, sweeping ones. We’ll see how I end up doing. What about you? What are your resolutions?

The Bird and the Slots

Other projects include my work with SkateBird which is going really well. I’m exploring some new approaches with the soundtrack and hope to be able to share some of this relatively soon. And I’m still working at SciPlay and loving it. Hopefully I’ll be able to share some of my recent work with SciPlay soon. My kids continue to grow larger and get louder. And more destructive. Every time my wife and I watch HGTV we always joke about how our kiddos could destroy those renovated home makeovers in a matter of minutes.

That’s about it for this update. I’m ready to make 2020 one of our best years yet. And I hope it’s the same for you all!

Happy Thanksgiving!

I have three more anime trailers to share with you all! But first off, HAPPY THANKSGIVING! I hope everyone was able to enjoy time with their friends, family and loved ones. Personally, I know I ate plenty of turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce (from the can of course) and had several servings of pie. I’m SOOOO full. This holiday is one of my favorites because its central focus is just getting together with those we love, appreciating what we have and what we mean to each other. And Christmas is RIGHT around the corner! (Inner little Nathan does a celebration dance!)

A few blog entries back I mentioned that I was working with FUNimation again as a contractor. I’m mixing dialog, sound design (if provided) and music from the anime shows then providing some of my own sound design as well then mastering that audio for their trailers. Three of my trailers have now gone live so I’m gonna share each of them here with you all! By the way, FUNimation has a TON of various anime properties to enjoy so go check out their Youtube channel. And without further adieu, here are the trailers:

One Piece – Episode of Skypiea

One Piece….. of PIE? (See what I did there???)

Meiji Tokyo Renka

Time Travel – It can be dramatic.

Star Blazers 2202 Part Two

I love space epics. How about you?

Working in anime again has been such a joy and a great way to exercise some audio/production skills I don’t often have to flex when working in slots or even in other forms of game development. Well, I’m got a feeling there’s another piece of pie in my future, so I’m going to go take care of that. Again, I wish all of you a wonderful holiday and hope it’s a great season of joy, charity and mutual respect for all of us. Take care! Be safe!

One of SciPlay’s Casinos, Goldfish, has a new feature called Ruby Reef. I had the pleasure of providing the music and sound design for this feature. Lobby themes tend to be on the shorter side of things and this track is about 52 seconds long. One aspect I’m pretty happy with is how I fused two different styles together and you can hear that change over at 35 seconds. Another element I’m happy with is layering in various recordings of my voice singing the melody with the horns during the A section. I intentionally tucked these vocal parts in a bit so it’s not super noticeable but adds a certain warmth and texture to the melody. I wanted the theme for Ruby Reef to be cool, energetic and sleek. I think the theme hits those marks pretty well and hopefully you’ll agree!

So many rubies…

This track has, at least to me, a unique vibe. It feels retro and modern at the same time. The Goldfish Casino has several new features, some new artwork as well as new sounds. Go check out the game and see for yourself!
